The Tru Table Inspection

Starrett precision level used by Metro Billiards Service

Every service performed by Metro Billiards Service begins with our Tru Table inspection — a comprehensive assessment of your pool table's condition before we touch it. It's included at no charge with every move, installation, refelting, or other service call.

What We Inspect

Our inspection covers every mechanical and structural aspect of your pool table:

  • Level: We check the playing surface with our Starrett precision machinist's level — far more accurate than a standard bubble level
  • Slate: We inspect for cracks, chips, improper shimming, and seam gaps
  • Cabinet & Frame: We check for warping, loose joints, and leg stability
  • Felt: We assess age, condition, wear patterns, and proper installation
  • Cushions: We test for cushion response and check for deterioration
  • Rails & Pockets: We inspect for proper alignment, tightness, and pocket integrity

Why This Matters

The inspection does two things. First, it gives you an honest picture of your table's condition — many pool table owners don't know what's wrong with their table, only that it doesn't play as well as it should. The inspection identifies specific problems and their causes. Second, it establishes a documented baseline so that after we complete our work, you know exactly what changed and why.

What Happens After the Inspection

We walk you through what we found. Some issues are addressed as part of the primary service at no extra charge — minor shimming corrections, simple adjustments, and component tightening. More significant issues (damaged slate, deteriorated cushion rubber, torn felt) are discussed with you before any additional work is done. You're never surprised by an unexpected charge.

The Starrett Level

Most pool table mechanics use a standard bubble level. We use a Starrett precision machinist's level — the same instrument used in machine shops and manufacturing environments where tolerances are measured in thousandths of an inch. A standard bubble level simply cannot detect the subtle level variation that causes a ball to drift on a long-distance roll. Our customers consistently tell us their table plays better after our service than it ever has. The level is a big part of why.
